We know that many of you have concerns about your careers after Chevening and the longer term impact of Covid-19 on employment opportunities. You’re not alone in this; many people, both Cheveners and non-Cheveners alike, have been worried about how the job market has changed because of global issues.
Finding employment that rewards and uses your new skills can be difficult and it can feel very frustrating when you can’t obtain it.
The socio-economic condition of my home country had worsened and it was tough settling back in. It took me 11 months to get a proper job however, I was freelancing on the side and recorded a lot of success doing that but like we know, nothing beats having a steady income.
When looking for a job, the top recommendations from alumni are to plan ahead and have a positive mindset.
OUR ALUMNI SAID:
Be open to try different work opportunities from those you had before. You have changed abroad and should be open to change back home.
Do not be discouraged. It may feel like you've wasted time pursuing a degree when you return home to be unemployed or underemployed. Use every opportunity as a stepping stone to your ultimate goal. Most importantly, reach out to your fellow scholars! You are not alone.
Plan ahead what you want to do when returning home, especially on career development plan. Inform your home country network that you are returning, find out about the latest opportunities. Put a mindset of how you can apply your study in your home country instead of feeling bad about leaving the life in the UK.
